From the video…
Colin:
“Artist protection in the sense of encompassing their rights is a really important part of the music industry now. Time was when people would have signed their rights across to someone else being a record company who would then look after it for them and the artist often times really didn’t have much involvement with their own rights. That has changed very much now, artists have been involved with their trademarks, their brand names, their fan base lists, their merchandise agreements, I mean, everything basically and that all involves another layer of legal protections and infrastructure which is still being iron out. The legal system is relatively complex I suppose, certainly for anyone who is not accustomed to it must be frightening though people who play in the industry all the time it is not nearly as complicated and it is a really important part of being an independent musician, you know, musicians can’t just hand across their lives to other people, part of this job is, if you want to be a musician with control of your life actually you have to take control of your life and that means legal arrangements from day one, that is really important.”
“Remember to register your songs.”
Lynda:
“Remember please it is very important that you register your songs, you can go to the website www.lmfmusic.info have a look through the FAQ, the artist copyright protection is information there, the link to the website APRA is there. Please, I can’t stress that enough, look after your work, protect yourself, register your songs.”
